Title: **Date Change*** Tbolt Track Day - 9-18-2017
Post by: John San on August 12, 2017, 09:41:40 AM
***TPM has cancelled the Sunday, 9/17 track day due to NJMP double booking the track for that day.  They have moved the day to Monday, 9/18***

We're looking at making Sunday 9-17 an NJRATS group track day.  So far it looks like at least myself, Terry Two Cakes, Don DaLoop, Capo and JamHar.  Post up if anyone else is interested.

I recommend booking it soon as it's a Sunday and I hear it's a popular one.  We'll try to get two garages next to each other as we can fit three in each.  Post any questions.

I just booked garage 117, so between 116&117 we'll have room for at least six bikes and four sets of tire warmers.  Going to be a great day!

Me and Don are also looking at Sunday, 8/27 w/EvolveGT.  I don't think Terry will be able to make that one, but some of the Tri State Superbike guys will be there and we will probably split an event garage with them.  They are a cool group to hang out with.  I'll start a thread on it as soon as I get it confirmed...

Sounds good Kevin. Hopefully we have enough room and the weather holds out.

Space shouldn't be a problem.  We can easily fit 6 bikes in the two garages, and the guys in the ART class will mostly be parking their bikes outside the classroom when not on the track anyway.  Bring a lawn chair or two and we'll all be able to hang out in the garages for lunch and for the afternoon.  I usually have plenty of tools if needed and I always have tape with me in case anyone needs to tape up the lights and mirrors before tech.  Make sure your tires are in good shape - at least 50-75% of tread left, plenty of meat left on your front brake pads, about 1.5 inches of chain slack when unloaded (yes, they will check that), and make sure all parts and fasteners are tight - especially oil fill caps, drain plugs and filters.  Pretty much common sense stuff.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Oh yeah, that blue and white blur that you will occasionally catch a glimpse of if you don't blink....  that'll be Don DaLoop!

Guys, this day has been cancelled and moved to Monday the 18th. Throws quite a monkey wrench into plans. And TPM hasn't even notified people, we found out from Mark. I'm hoping to make it, and you should as well, but contact TPM for credit if you can't.

I have a message into TPM to get the official word, but I've heard it from multiple sources now.  I know Monday is more difficult to make, but if the weather is anything like this past Monday it will be totally worth burning a sick day!  Last Monday was awesome - ride report on that will be coming later this week.   I'm looking into the garage options for Monday as well and will see if I can just transfer what I already have reserved.  More info to follow, but everyone who's registered for Sunday should contact TPM to find out what your options are.

I emailed them as well. If it is true then that sucks. I won't be able to make it on Monday. It's impossible for me to cancel so many patients on such short notice.

TPM got back to me, confirmed what we already know that the track double booked and their track day is cancelled.  They were able to just transfer my registration over to Monday as well as garage 117 under the VIP suites, so that still stands.  It does suck though because I know most of you can't make it.  Me and Don will be there and it looks like potentially Capo and Ski, so we should be able to make do with one garage.  TPM is running track days the next weekend (23rd & 24th), both days at Thunderbolt.  I can't make it because I'll be out of town, but I definitely would encourage the guys who can't make Monday to transfer their registration to one of those days and at least get out and get that first day under your belt.  That way for next season you can just register and go and not have to do the classroom thing if you don't want to.  Let me know if you have any questions and I'll post up if any new info comes my way.  Sorry about the screw up by NJMP, it's a total bummer...    >:(

Yeah, me too - was really looking forward to getting a good group of NJRATs out there for the day.  On the other hand you know how much time the first day classroom stuff takes, so if everyone got that out of the way this season we can set up a good NJRATS track day early next season where everyone would get more time to hang out together and talk about the track, corners, tips and tricks, etc like we usually do at a typical track day.

Well it was a bummer that Sunday the 17th was cancelled, but we made the best of it with a great track day on Monday.  Don and I were joined by Capo and Kevin this time, with Kevin getting his first taste the track on his Triumph Sprint.  Capo and I had our Daytonas of course, and even though Don brought his Daytona the real story was the debut of his new R6 superbike build.  No corners were cut on this dedicated race bike - Ohlins brand new top of the line suspension, Brembo monoblock brakes and master, shaved and balanced crank, race ECU, detailed dyno tuning, and the list just goes on...

It was a little drizzly in the AM but never enough to even get the track damp, so no problems there.  It was perhaps the least crowded track day I've ever attended, which I think worked out well for us.  They merged the red and blue groups into one, ran a single novice group, and then a car group (yuck).  I personally like when they merge the red and blue groups.  Since I am on the verge of moving up to blue it really helps to get to run with those guys and try to sharpen my skills to keep up.  It does get a little hairy sometimes though - I was passing a guy on the inside coming over Wheelie Hill and maybe a was a little closer than the required five feet, but not by much, when a guy comes through between us and bangs into the left side of my bike!  This is at 90 to 100mph as we're starting to brake into turn 4!  Luckily our bikes didn't get tangled and no one went down, but it was a little scary.  The guy was way too aggressive for a track day.  He did look back after we got through the corner and put his left hand up in a customary "I'm sorry" wave, but I was still a little pissed.  All part of the game though.  I didn't improve on my personal best at all, but I did run very consistently in the 1:41 - 1:42 range so I know it's just a matter of time before I hit that sub 1:40 benchmark.

Don spent most of the day getting used to the new Yamaha, but pretty much was able to run his normal mid-1:30s pace right off the bat, which says a lot for both the bike and his riding skills.  I think he's just a track day or two away from knocking a few seconds off his pace with the new R6.

Kevin and Capo did great learning the track and feeling out the tricky spots like the turn 4 and 5 section and the tough turn 9 into 10 transition.  It definitely takes time to put it all together but it feels great when it all starts coming together.

We're looking at finishing out the season with a few more track days in October.  Will post up the dates as we get them on the schedule.

It was definitely a fun day, and a nice, uncrowded environment. I focused on consistency and trying out different line, gear, braking and other elements, followed coaches, observed and took mental notes.

The Daytona was delightful, Never missed a beat. One little slide caught my attention, but I refocused. I improved each session, became more consistent, and ended up with a string of decent laps in the 2:02 range, finally ending up with a 1:59, which I suppose isn't bad for my first real track day. Looking forward to the next one, prob mid- October for me.

I had a great time and really got to see what the Sprint could do and couldn’t do. I basically can do anything it’s the operator that was the deciding factor. I don’t think I pushed myself or the bike to it’s last limits but that was not the intent at this juncture. Fun was a goal and fun was had so mission accomplished. I took my GoPro on a few of the sessions and I’m analyzing my lines of entry and exit. The videos are kind of deceiving since it the speed somehow for some reason doesn’t translate compared to being on the bike. But video is a good tool and I think I’ll be better prepared to challenge myself as a rider and the machine. It was as always great to hang with John, Capo and Don on my first track day and I look to many more down the road now that I have one under my belt.

Great to have you out there Kevin!  It definitely takes a bit of work to get it right, plus you need to become familiar with the track which also takes some time.  No one goes out there and just tears it up - it even took Don a few track days before he started dragging his knees!  Looking forward to seeing you out there again before the end of the season.
