Escape From New York
« on: December 11, 2015, 09:10:51 AM »
My amazing wife has given her retirement notice after a distinguished 35 years at ABC television here in New York. We've ended our our apartment lease as of December 31, we have leased a small SUV, and we will be taking the motorcycle and the cage in tandem around the United States over the next year or two. After spending New Year's Eve on Cape Cod with family, we will find our way into Florida and then west beginning in February.

I am soliciting recommendations on fun places for two-up motorcycling as well as automobile visiting throughout the country. We have invested in a National Parks passport for 2016. We will have our road bicycles with us and we are very happy to ride them 50 miles in the course of a full day. Depending on the elevation of course.

Please post your recommendations and add a link if possible, thank you very much!

Totally awesome David!   Off the top of my head, do not miss the north rim of the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Park when you get out west.

Awesome! For inspiration, watch Albert Brooks' '80's classic 'Lost in America' this weekend. As for places, when you get to the West Coast, I can patch you in to the NJRATS LA branch and clubhouse for escorted rides in the Angeles Crest and canyons.

Those three parks have already been discussed as Wendy has visited them all but I've only been to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon myself.

Thanks for the LA connection, and as far as the Julie Hagerty film, I promise you I will not wind up as a crossing guard drooling over Mercedes-Tex interiors in Arizona.

Now that sounds like a fantastic trip! You can't go wrong with any of the mentioned parks, I've been to the GC three times and the best time is always sunrise or sunset. if you elect to go to the bottom I don't recommend taking a donkey unless you have a good supply of Xanax with you. Looking forward to the ride reports, enjoy!

Congrats to you both.
My travels west of the NJ/PA border are still fairly limited, but I did get out to Colorado last year.  Stayed in Denver and went to Red Rocks park/amphitheatre.  It would make a good cycle/visit which ever way you do it.  Stunningly impressive, and there's a little Hall of Fame hidden underneath at the back too.
We stood on the stage and pretended to be rockstars for a few minutes, because there were no restrictions on non-event days.  Would love to go back and see a show there too though.
