Colorado 2011 bucket list
« on: April 27, 2011, 11:39:08 AM »
I am not going to limit access to this list but I would like to keep things trim. This is for compiling a list of things that Shaun, John, Tri-amaha and myself want to accomplish on this, what I believe is, my last trip to the Front Range. There are things that I MUST do before I leave and things I want to re-do as well. I am reaching out to our Colorado local friends for feedback as well as previous years veterans. So, in Summary, You should only post to this topic if you are
>Going this year
>a Colorado local with suggestions
> a Rats Ride the Rockies veteran, again with suggestions

I want to:
>Ride Independence Pass
>Ride along the Poudre River Canyon but I want to be effin alert the whole time. Not at the end of a 400 mile dirt road day! This will require a different approach from last year. I don't need to do Trail Ridge Pass or Walden ever again. Nice route from Boulder to the Poudre and ride that bitch until I'm finished. Maybe turn around at that ludicrous "Scenic Overlook" in the middle of the High Plains.
>Eat at the German place on Coal Creek Canyon.
>Do the canyon loops north (Left Hand/South St. vrain) and south (Coal Creek/Golden gate) of Nederland. I could spend the rest of my life doing these.
>Ride in El Dorado which seems to be a box canyon. I've just passed it so often.
>Be the designated driver every night my craft beer guzzling buddies need to go out.
>Find where the cheap dirt is. I would love to plop a trailer on some cheap real estate like I have done in the Florida Keys. So far I have only found the expensive or the obscenely expensive stuff. Somebody's washing the dishes in Ned. Where does that guy live?

Okay that's it for me.

Things to do list

> Pike's Peak : if weather permits
> The Poudre: Don't care how I get there, but I want to go up and down it.
> Get video of riding Boulder/Left Hand/South St. Vrain Canyons. See if I can get sick of riding them.
> explore the roads south of I-70 in Pike National Forest
> Cross Bethoud Pass.

Eating related.
> Get some BBQ and Beer at Wild Mountain in Ned
> Eat at the Westfalen Hof off of Coal Creek
> Eat at the Black Forrest in Ned. At least check it out.
> A full sit down meal at Oscar Blues. Doesn't matter which one.
> Ride down to the Avery Tap room. Partake.

Comment on Bill's List
I don't think they are projecting Independence Pass to open before Memorial Day.

I'm up for all of these - The muscles at Oskar Blues were awesome, so I could definitely go for a full dinner there.

Bill, the hop heads might need a designated driver for this run...

Also, I think we should have a lunch or dinner at Cilantro Mary's in honor of Kelner.  Don't worry - we'll get separate checks...

Ply me with that fine Oskar Blues Root Beer and I am at your service.
Separate checks? I am over my pouting fit after Cilantro Mary's. But I will never forget my $18 lemonade.

I see a Kelner memory run as containing:
A meal at Wild Mountain, where we met.
A stop at his accident location on Boulder Canyon. I will try to tactfully uncover the location.
Avery Tap Room which is how I remember him. In his overalls.
Dinner at Oskar Blues in Longmont because that's where I last saw him.

This is a good plan, I approve.

Shane (local we'll meet on this trip) sent this:

A 34-year-old Nederland man died Friday while driving his motorcycle in Boulder Canyon, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Kellner Schoenke was headed east on his 2001 Triumph motorcycle about 8:30 a.m. Friday when he went off the right side of the road at mile marker 28, which is two miles east of Nederland, according to trooper Nate Reid.

Schoenke's bike rolled, and he was ejected, according to Reid. He was airlifted to St. Anthony's Central Hospital in Denver, where he died. Drugs and alcohol were not involved, Reid said.

It's unclear what caused Schoenke to go off the road

If I were going this year my plan would have been to take a ride down the four corners for the night and camp. :(

The last time for me was at the Sundance cafe during breakfast.

Thanks, I forgot that one. Since they make the best breakfast Burrito's I've ever had I need to add that to the Kelner Memorial Tour. I think the only one  with an extra stop to the tour might be Shaun. He had that extra time at Kelner's place on top of the Canyons. I forget the details.
And only Shaun, Ducmom and I saw him in 2009. The rest of you left early that year.

Try not to look at NJRATS.COM while you're cruising the mediterranean. The new Mrs. Lozano might mistake your quiet sobs as you not liking the honeymoon.

That's from that trading post at the base of Mt Evans, right?  Killer pie it was...

That's the place. If it wasn't so far, I'd make a trip there again.

Yeah, it was good pie but being that the road up Mt. Evens won't be open it seems less good...

Okay that's it for me.

What an abysmal score for my bucket list! I rode the 5 canyons, many twice. Weather and health permitting I will get to the Poudre River canyon today. That's it. It may be time to plan for the next trip. Did someone say DO-OVER?
