Ride the Rockies - Colorado 2011
« on: January 16, 2011, 06:28:22 PM »
The part of the Rockies run that is FIRM is the dates for the fly-ins. You can chisel this in stone.

Arrive: Saturday, MAY 14th - find as early a flight as possible and all get on it. No more dribbling in all day on Saturday.
Leave: Sunday, May 22nd -  try to find a mid afternoon flight and all fly together if possible.
I would appreciate conforming to these dates and times as it makes loading and leaving simpler for all of us.
You may fly in a day or two earlier as I intend to have the ground transport there by Wednesday at the latest.
I have three drivers signed up. One more and we can consider a second truck trailer combination. Ground travelers will leave Monday the 9th and leave for home on Monday the 23rd. The standing record is 32 hours. More like 36-40.
Those of you who are veterans of Colorado know you will want to ride every day, all day.
What I want from you is a report on your level of interest. The are some discounts I'm looking to get where I need to know how much buying power I have.

So far we might be a threesome. Harvey wants to drive with us. If we get one more driver we could take your truck with a light trailer and we could swap partners all the way out. Creepy.

It is very important that I know level of interest ASAP. We still have space on the cheap(-ish)  trailer. I have VIP deals and 10% discounts with the following brands: BMW, Ducati, and Triumph. I will try to get the same on Moto Guzzi and Yamaha. I need to know what other brands are coming. I have a discount code good for 10% at Boulder Mt. Lodge and it's time to make reservations. I have no idea what plane fares will be but I must assume that waiting longer will result in higher prices.
At this point I have expanded the invitation to include friends of the group and will soon expand to the world through some posters at local shops, both bike and snob beer, and forums on the internet. Please let me know what's up for you.

Lodging questions?
Here's where we stay. Boulder is full of normal options and Nederland even has a Best Western and some little hotel built right on the Continental divide with an awesome view right down the Front Range.
We like the Boulder Mountain Lodge. It is priced higher than one might expect given its rustic nature but the location and ambience is perfect. Plus they let us take over their lower parking lot for all our bikes and 20' trailer.

Those of you looking at the BML rates should note that May is "Summer" and therefore the higher rates apply. However I have negotiated an extra 10% off the rates so the actual rate is 20% off the higher number.

Arrive: Saturday, MAY 14th - find as early a flight as possible and all get on it. No more dribbling in all day on Saturday.

Last year, three of us were on the first flight out of Newark. It was godaweful early.

I was looking at a flight out of Newark at 9:20am.  That seemed the earliest.  I will probably book later tonight.

I recall picking up fly-ins from just before noon through almost dinner time. The edge to the before noon arrival is I will guarantee you a couple canyons totaling 100 beautiful miles before dinner.
For those of you trying to do the math remember these things. It is 2 hours later in Denver than NYC. Besides the usual airport BS the bus will take almost an hour to go from the airport to the bus terminal in Boulder. (Some of the airport buses go right up to Nederland after Boulder. These routes take you within 100 yds of Boulder Mountain Lodge) I don't mind picking you up at the bus terminal. Plus it is 1 block away from the liquor/beer supermarket.

I have booked flights.  Unfortunately, I have decided that i can't really do the extended-extended vacation, so it's just the 14th to the 22nd for me.

Continental Airlines Flight 688
Sat, May 14, 2011
Depart: 07:05am
Arrive: 09:20am

I'll be in boulder before noon. I think this was the same flight as last year. It's only a three point two mile walk from the bus terminal to BML.

Continental Airlines Flight 429
Sun, May 22, 2011
Depart: 12:20pm
Arrive: 06:05pm

I personally have no objection to picking you and John up. The logistical difficulty is there is no cell coverage at BML. So it's really just a matter of keeping me informed via e-mail of any hitches to the schedule. You really don't want to make a 3 mile hike with luggage, especially if you wear your bathrobe on the plane.

I've made longer walks with luggage. But the plan is to *not* have luggage, which was the reason for the bathrobe.

I am on the same flight as Shaun going out to DEN.   Heading back to EWR at 1220 on Saturday, so I am flying out a day earlier.

Booked my room at BML tonight, they gave me 10% off the weekly rate as a returning customer, but would not go for the additional 10% for being with the NJRAT club.  I got the last kitchen room available for that week!
